Since I was more interested in vintage, I watched all the vintage videos for the cast iron machines. Also the motor service and repair series is a must if you're interested in getting into the electrical stuff.

I am finding on market place that prices vary widely. Many have no idea what machine they are selling. Keep an eye out , tell them youare learning to fix and see if they will drop the price. Be patient.

I’ve opened machines that are “practice”. If I ruin them no one is harmed. I get them for free or for very little $. That may help you get your feet wet.

I had one with lithium grease. It was a huge mess! I have really enjoyed learning. Next one I’m going to work on is a Singer 15 in a cabinet that my daughter picked up on the side of the road. This has been really fun!

Yep, I opened a Singer 9510 and someone had thought “ooh, I’ll put lithium grease on the needle bar”. Took me an hour to pick off! And isopropyl alcohol on a Q-Tip (blue creeper not available in Australia)

Rust on the hand wheel - clean initially with isopropyl alcohol on a rag or q-tip, then use 600 grit wet & dry sandpaper, followed by 1500 grit. Works a treat.

Yes indeed. When I go to a thrift store (we call them op-shops in Australia!) I make a bee-line for the linen section as I’ve found 100% cotton flat sheets, and then I go to the fabric stash. And as Suzette says, tops and skirts also
